Florence Talevakarua

Āhuru Taituarā Matua Operations Coordinator

Florence plays a central role in supporting the Hei Āhuru Mōwai Tumuaki/CEO and Operations team to fulfil the guiding principles, mission, and strategic goals of the organisation.

Florence embarked on her journey in the health sector completing her studies as a laboratory technician with the New Zealand Institute of Medical Laboratory Science in 2012. She has recently worked with Biomedical Services NZ in partnership with Te Whatu Ora, overseeing the day-to-day operations and contract management supporting 5,000 patients affected by sleep apnoea.

Florence observed significant barriers to Māori and Pacific peoples’ access for sleep apnoea diagnoses and treatment, causing her to take a special interest in this issue.

Inspired by the notion of hautūtanga, Florence is passionate about reinforcing the importance of manaakitanga and engaging in mahi that contributes to the fair and equal rights of - and equitable health outcomes for - whānau Māori.

At Hei Āhuru Mōwai, Florence is grateful to be surrounded by a supportive team. She takes solace in the opportunity to engage with and enhance her connection to her Māori heritage, weaving this cultural connection into the kaupapa she advocates for in her role.

With profound ties to Ngāti Maniapoto, Florence enjoys supporting her marae initiatives and seizing every opportunity to take her whānau home to learn, contribute and strengthen connections with their wider whānau.
